Summer Time Means Hair Removal Time

With the summer sun finally making an appearance, it's all change on the wardrobe front. Out go layers and covering up to stay warm and in comes summer wear, exposing...hairy legs! It's time to not just think about changing your wardrobe, but changing how you think about hair removal too.

Summer dresses, shorts, short sleeves and swimming costumes can all expose areas of skin that haven't seen the light of day since last summer. And while during the winter it may be acceptable to let your legs and underarms tolerate a little bit of stubble or even forgo the shaving altogether, now those areas are going to be on display for the whole world to see.

So it's time to think about getting rid of unwanted body hair to achieve that buff summer look. The most common forms of hair removal are shaving, waxing and hair removal creams. But for permanent hair removal, many people are now turning to laser treatment. Laser hair removal uses pulses of laser light to stop individual hair follicles from producing hairs.

The laser's energy is turned into heat and this burns up the follicle, changing its cellular structure and stopping the follicle from producing a hair. It works best on people with light skin and dark hair, although advances in laser technology now means that almost anyone can get great results from laser hair removal
.

However, before you consider laser hair removal treatment, it is essential that you talk to an expert in the process to make sure that your skin type and colouring are suitable for laser treatment. So why do we go through this endless cycle of scraping, waxing, plucking and even using laser technology?

In western cultures, a hairless body is seen as more desirable and socially more acceptable than one that is 'au naturale'. But it isn't just about aesthetics or social acceptability - it's also a matter of hygiene. Hairs on the body trap any moisture the body produces, keeping it on the surface of the skin to act as a cooling agent. So when we sweat, this is actually our body regulating our core temperature by cooling the outer layer of skin.

The trouble is, in places such as the armpits or groin this sweat can produce an unpleasant odour. It also allows bacteria to breed and if the skin is broken or irritated this can in turn lead to skin infections. By removing unwanted hair, it is easier to keep that area of the body clean and sweat free, improving personal hygiene and reducing the risk of skin infections.

During the summer we sweat much more, so removing unwanted hair when the weather is warmer is actually a quite natural thing to do (think about how your cat or dog 'sheds' its winter coat in the spring - that's just nature's way of removing unwanted additional body hair!) During the summer, all most people want to do is get out there and enjoy the great weather, stay cool and comfortable and still look good.

Smooth, hair free skin is the socially acceptable look during the summer. If you don't want to spend an inordinate amount of time in the bathroom waxing, shaving or getting messy with hair removal creams, a more permanent solution that will last through to the next summer is a desirable alternative. Laser hair removal offers that permanent solution.
